New Horizons Aviation FAQ

What airplanes does New Horizons Aviation rent?

We have three Cessna 152s, two Cessna 172s, a Diamond Star FP (DA-40 FP), a Piper Cherokee (PA28-180), and a Redbird Full Motion Simulator. In addition to our training fleet, we offer a Cessna 172 and a Diamond Star DA40 for rental only. Both are equipped with autopilot.

What is different about the Diamond Star compared to Pipers and Cessnas?

The Diamond is an exciting, efficient single engine airplane manufactured in Austria and London, Ontario. It features a composite airframe, a control stick, and a castering nose wheel. It is built for safety and is fun to fly, with enjoyable flight characteristics in all regimes. The DA40 is a four seat airplane used for rental, Private, and Instrument training. It includes the advanced Garmin G1000 avionics package.

If I am used to flying Pipers and Cessnas, is the transition difficult into the Diamond Star?

Pilots who are actively flying Pipers and Cessnas typically transition quickly into the Diamond. Checkouts usually take 2 to 4 hours for the DA40. The Garmin G1000 may require a bit more time to learn.

Sporty's and other aviation suppliers offer G1000 training products that suggest 8 to 10 hours of training. Are these necessary?

While these products are helpful, we recommend pilots transitioning to the G1000 spend 1 to 2 hours with one of our instructors and 2 to 3 hours in the aircraft. This provides a solid framework for learning the essentials. Pilots familiar with the Garmin 430 or 530 will find many similarities. Additional resources and student materials are available in our office.

What are the rental rates for the airplanes and the instructors?

- Cessna 152s: $124 per hour

- Cessna 172s: $159 per hour

- Diamond Star: $159 per hour

- Piper Cherokee: $159 per hour

- Cessna 172 – N7791: $175 per hour

- Diamond DA-40 – N446SB: $185 per hour

- Redbird Flight Simulator: $84 per hour

All rental rates are "wet," meaning fuel is included. If you purchase fuel at another location, we have a reimbursement policy.

- Flight Instruction (Private Pilot): $40 per hour

- Flight Instruction (Advanced, BFR, checkouts): $45 per hour

Does New Horizons provide training in a Light Sport Airplane?

We do not currently have a Light Sport airplane in our fleet, but our instructors are qualified to provide Light Sport training if you own your own aircraft.

What if I haven’t flown in a while? What do I need to do?

If you haven’t flown with us in more than six months, a checkout flight with one of our instructors is required. This helps ensure safety and proficiency for both you and our team.
